Space Miner is Phenomenal (Even the 3rd Time Through!)

March 4th, 2010

It’s rare that I find a video game that after finishing, I immediately want to play again…twice.  Space Miner: Space Ore Bust is a masterpiece!  It takes the simple asteroids formula (aka. blow up rocks), and allows you to mine them, kill little robots, and in the process upgrade your ship.  Add a descent storyline, fun music and from five minutes in, I was hooked.  Honestly, I could only name a few other iPhone games of this caliber, and for $2.99 on Space Miner: Space Ore Bust, it’s money well spent.

Controls:  Space Miner’s controls work fantastically.  They’re adjustable, flippable, can be hidden, and most importantly are responsive to all the asteroid destruction that is call for.

Physics: The physics behind the ship you’re controlling are natural and smooth.  When, you turn, you glide.  You bounce off of asteroids.  Asteroids bounce off of other asteroids, and each object seems to have an appropriate mass and, accordingly, appropriate responses to other objects.  Simply amazing for such a simple game…

Sounds/Music:  My hat is off to the sound team.  The banjo music was fantastic.  Plus, the robots make the best sounds…especially when you kill them.

Loot!:  I have to say that the driving force for my playing the game through several times was the loot.  As the game progresses, you can purchase new ship hulls, engines, shields, weapons, etc.  What’s amazing here is that gameplay is fun enough that this never feels like a grind.  And best part is, they save a few special items to be unlocked in “Hard” and “HardcORE” modes.  If they released an update with new loot, I’d play it through again.

Graphics: The game looks great.  Check out the game play video to see for yourself.

Story:  There are multiple storylines, diversions from the story, and other random places to explore.  The writers seems to have a sense of humor in knitting this all together.

Space Ore is a fantastic blend of modern and retro gaming.  If you haven’t already played it, I can’t encourage you enough to give it a shot.  For $2.99 on Space Miner: Space Ore Bust, you’d be hard put to find a better game.

** Rare N64 Prototype – Translucent purple/white ** While it may be possible to make a similar N64 by taking apart and 2 N64s and swapping one top for another, I haven’t seen that lighter white/light gray color of a bottom before.  The seller explains the following about this unit’s design.  “Up for sale is a N64 Prototype console in translucent clear purple/white color as you can see on the photos – This prototype was manufactured back in 1998/1999 for Nintendo of Europe together with eleven other N64 Prototypes before releasing the famous Funtastic Color Series. Nintendo produced several colors to decide which of them will hit the maket. This one did not!”

Rare Video Games & Collectibles on eBay: Sealed Stadium Events, M8, M82, Atari Demo Unit, and a $200 Ruler

February 26th, 2010

Here are some rare video games, systems, promo items, and collectibles that I’m watching on eBay.  I love the fact that eBay is essentially a live museum of video gaming rarity.  Happy retro gaming and good luck collecting!

$$$$ — For the Video Game Collector with an Unlimited Budget

FACTORY SEALED NEW NES NINTENDO STADIUM EVENTS NTSC If you’re not aware of this auction (currently at $41,300.00 USD with 3 hours to go), then you’re missing out on the world’s most expensive video game auction to date.

Stadium Events Nes game What will be equally interesting will be to see if history repeats itself with this auction for another copy of a sealed Stadium Events.  It’s currently at $7,300.00 USD with 3 days to go…but seems a bit sketchy.

$$$ — For the Collector Whose Grandma Just Died (Or Who Has a Job and a Budget)

**** Atari 2600 Game *** Coke Wins – Pepsi Invaders *** Apparently Coca-Cola used this custom 2600 promo cartridge to allow users to dominate the minions of Pepsi.  I think that’s simply awesome.

Nintendo NES M8 Kiosk Store Display Unit This original Nintendo display unit predates the M82.  The seller is certainly asking a pretty penny for it, but at least he has the best offer feature going.

Nintendo M82 Game Selectable Working Product Display This crazy dude is asking a freakish amount of $35,000.00 USD or best offer for this thing.  Clearly he’s out of his mind.  They run about $1,000 USD for the unit.  However, it is rare to find in the box.

Rare Nintendo Store Display Machine M82 These display units are fantastic.  They’re certainly on my wish list.

Rare 1982 Atari VCS Store Demo 45 Games plus slot WORKS Starting the bid at $99.00 USD, this seems like a fair opportunity for Atari collectors to pick one of these up.

Nintendo Mario Soda Store Display Promo Signs NES Expensive, but a great Nintendo promo item none the less.

Nintendo GameCube Donkey Kong Kiosk Display Setup

EarthBound Promotional Ruler Super Nintendo SNES Promo! There’s nothing like spending hundreds of dollars on a ruler…yes, a simple wood ruler. (Update: Sold for $776.47 USD on Feb. 28, 2010)
